Friends of the Park

Come and help to make Alderley Edge one of the most pleasurable places to live in Cheshire. We need sufficient numbers of local people to join our group, 'Friends of Alderley Edge Park' to realise our latest idea of creating a cafe in the park; The Pavilion Cafe. You will not be required to contribute anything at this stage other than adding your name to our website. Local support is imperative for such a community based idea.

How You Can Help

The Friends of Alderley Edge Park website has been specifically created to encourage local people to join us; members of the community who are committed to revitalising the park and increasing everyone’s pleasure and enjoyment of it.

In the recent Parish Plan Questionnaire people commented on the lack of ‘a sense of community'. Alderley Edge is perceived as somewhere that people pass through/visit and not truly live in and enjoy. In order to begin to create a greater sense of community we thought we would concentrate our efforts on the park - a possible catalyst for this.

In order to increase our pleasure and enjoyment and bring together the existing elements in the park, our idea is to use the pavilion as a cafe. From our own recent research and canvassing, it is apparent that local people are very much in favour of the idea of the ‘Pavilion Cafe in the Park'.

We anticipate that the cafe will be open for most of the year and be used by all ages. We are reliably informed that young mothers would relish the idea of being able to relax, have a coffee, meet a friend and gather their thoughts after their early morning school run. The newly refurbished tennis courts will be well used and players would, no doubt, welcome the ability to sit and enjoy the facilities offered by the cafe whilst reflecting on their game. Being able to simply buy a cup of tea and read a book or newspaper surrounded by greenery would be a welcome break and pleasure for people working in the village.

The occasion of the Live Aid Concert in the Park is well remembered and we would hope that similar, smaller, events could also take place incorporating the cafe.

Sadly, some young people have tended to spend their time in the park in a far from constructive manner. We would seek to involve many of them from the outset and hopefully being involved from an early stage would make them feel part of the community and encourage better social responsibility.

How do we go about opening our cafe? ‘Friends of the Park' is the first step. Historically, Alderley Edge Park has been managed by Macclesfield Borough Council (now Cheshire East Unitary Authority). In brief, they are very supportive and encouraging but they would not be able to provide financial help at this stage. We would need to elicit interest and help from the local community/businesses and ‘prove' ourselves. After a suitable period of time, more formal arrangements would be put in place.

Funding may be forthcoming from Parish Plan monies but again, we would have to show that there was sufficient interest from the local community. Local Parish Councillors are already supportive of our project.

If you think that you can support our idea, would you please either contact us by telephone or complete the form on our website (click on 'Contact us').

Would you please note that the website has only recently been created; we hope to add more information soon

Thank you for visiting our site. We look forward to hearing from you!
